Adolf Hitler epitomizes evil for many, and military memorabilia dealer Craig Gottlieb will be the first to acknowledge that point. He also knows that some people find anything associated with the Fà ¼hrer or Nazi Germany to be â€Å"downright creepy.† But Gottlieb believes historically significant items, even those belonging to Hitler, offer learning opportunities and should be preserved and displayed rather than destroyed and forgotten. The Authentic Copy Proving this point, Gottlieb, known for his expert consulting on militaria  for the hit History Channel program Pawn Stars, auctioned off Hitler’s personal copy of Mein Kampf through his website at historyhunter.com in 2014. This 1932 edition bears Hitler’s own bookplate inside the front cover and is presumed to be the only author-owned copy in existence. The impact Mein Kampf —which translates to â€Å"my struggle†Ã¢â‚¬â€had on world history is not disputable. In a 2014 interview, Gottlieb said: â€Å"This is bigger than a mere book. Hitler changed the world, and we’re still living with those changes. What makes it exciting to me is that artifacts like this make history relevant to people. Studying and thinking about Adolph Hitler is something that we absolutely should be doing.† He also noted that the book written by Hitler outlining his master plan was one of the most printed titles in the world.  Ã¢â‚¬Å"There was a joke that everyone in Germany had a copy, but nobody read it because it was so badly written.† Had more people read this book back in the day, they would have had no doubt about Hitler’s intentions detailed implicitly in this â€Å"autobiographical manifesto,† as it was described in a news release distributed by Gottlieb’s publicists. The book, written in 1923 and first published in July of 1925, outlines Hitler’s political ideology and future plans for Germany.   Hitlers Personal Copy The copy Gottlieb  offered at auction was part of a group of Hitler’s personal belongings liberated from the Nazi leader’s Munich apartment in 1945 by United States Army First Lieutenant Philip Ben Lieber. This book, along with others from Hitler’s library, was sold to Gottlieb in 2013 along with a hat, shirt, medals, and a number of other items. This copy of Mein Kampf  was the first item from this collection to be offered for public sale. Others have been sold privately to collectors who are students of human nature and value the study of history. This artifact is historically significant and I would love to see it go to a museum, Gottlieb added. He acknowledged, however, that market realities would likely influence this copy of Mein Kampf going to a collector who appreciated its place in history. Gottlieb also planned to donate a portion of the proceeds from the auction to a Jewish charity. Being Jewish himself, he qualified this as â€Å"historic irony† and relished being able to funnel support to an organization fostering education about the Holocaust by selling an artifact written and formerly owned by none other than Hitler. The Value of Mein Kampf Editions Gottlieb noted that Mein Kampf originals dating from the 1920s through the end of World War II are readily available on the market since so many of them were originally printed. Collectors wanting a copy can easily find a basic 1932 edition similar to the one that Gottlieb  auctioned for about $200. But the Hitler-owned version offered for sale was not an average example. Provenance was considered the key to high value in this instance. â€Å"The chain of custody of the book is unbroken since 1945,† said Gottlieb. â€Å"This particular artifact is one of the most profound in the group, which makes the provenance that supports the artifact so crucial to its value.† The book was described and mentioned in several key documents in Gottliebs possession, copies of which were included with the book’s sale. Gottleib predicted that this rare copy could exceed $100,000. But when the hammer fell in November 2014, the book sold for $28,400 with no buyers premium. Signed copies of Mein Kampf with authenticated autographs have sold for $65,000–70,000 in the past, but those were not personally owned by Hitler like this one was. Gottleibs original prediction led to speculation that the book might do quite a bit better in different markets, but on March 18, 2016, two years after Gottleibs first sale and despite interest from 10 bidders, the book had dropped in value, selling for $20,655. In June of 2017, a different copy with an authenticated autograph by Hitler sold for  £17,000 (about $21,700 at the time). Esearch is an ESPN database software where they store all of the clips they gather. ESPN has a large database so using it to obtain a small amount of video footage has its difficulties. First to sign in to research you need to obtain a six digit code from one of the project managers. I was not in contact with most of them and truly just friendly with one so I went to Andy. Andy gave me the code and helped me get accustomed to the database and how it works. First, you must type in a start date and an end date so the database can minimize the videos you are searching for. They had an alphabet of twenty letters called Ogham. Each letter was named after a tree from the land where they lived. Ogham was used on standing stones, primarily on graves and boundary markers. The primary sources of information about the Celts are, in that light, the texts written by the Romans who were in touch with them and Christian monks, who lived in Irish monasteries in the Middle Ages. Caesar, Livy and Tacitus, wrote about their contemporaries who lived in a way different than themselves and therefore were considered barbarians, but even though they did not have a positive attitude towards them, they still left some useful information about Celtic society, religion, way of life, and so on. One of the problems that arise from this is that many things in these writings are romanised, e.g. Caesar interprets Celtic gods and calls them by the names of their Roman equivalents: They worship as their divinity, Mercury, in particular, and have many images of him, and regard him as the inventor of all arts, they consider him the guide of their journeys and marches, and believe him to have great influence over the acquisition of gain and mercantile transactions. Next to him they worship Apollo, and Mars, and Jupiter, and Minerva; respecting these deities they have for the most part the same belief as other nations: that Apollo averts diseases, that Minerva imparts the invention of manufactures, that Jupiter possesses the sovereignty of the heavenly powers; that Mars presides over wars. The second type of sources are the books written from 6th - 13th century on by Christian monks in Ireland and Celtic Britain. These books were written several centuries later, so the oral tradition might have changed and much of the information was under Christian influences. The Celts were one of the most significant and powerful peoples in Europe from fourth until first century BC, and their culture one of the most influential. From then on they had a turbulent history, and their legacy continues to live even today. The Celts are, by definition, all the people who spoke or speak one of the Celtic languages. A unifying Celtic language existed probably somewhere between 1200 and 750 BC, in the Bronze Age, when Urnfield culture was at its peak. This people spoke a language that would later develop into Celtic. Their ur- Celtic developed in two dialects, first Goidelic (or Q Celtic) and later Brythonic (or P Celtic). Goidelic transformed into the languages spoken in Ireland, Isle of Man and Scotland; Brythonic into Welsh, Cornish and Breton. The next period of Celtic history is connected with Hallstatt culture, which existed approximately from 700 to 500 BC. The later Iron Age phase of Celtic culture is called La Tne, after a site in western Switzerland and dates from 5th to 1st century BC. The Celts almost certainly began to expand to the British Isles during this period. Their influence extended from what are now France, Spain, and British Isles to the shores of the Black Sea from the Ukraine to Turkey. When the Romans came to these territories, they ended the La Tne culture, but in the places they did not occupy, like as Ireland and Scotland, the La Tne culture prospered until about 200 AD. The word Celt comes from Keltoi, the name that Greek writers gave to these people. To the Romans, the Continental Celts were known as Galli and Galatae, or Gauls and they called those in Britain Pritanni.
